Location and Date Visited #

The Baxter Inn, Sydney, Australia. Visited in March 2018.

Nestled in the heart of Sydney’s bustling CBD, The Baxter Inn is a hidden gem tucked down an unassuming laneway. Finding it felt like being let in on a well-kept secret — no signs, just whispers of where to go. The underground vibe hits you the moment you step inside, and it’s nothing short of enchanting.

The Good #

Atmosphere #

The moment I walked in, I was transported to another world. The dimly lit, whisky-soaked ambiance paired with vintage jazz music oozed character. It’s one of those places where you instantly feel cooler just for being there.

Whisky Selection #

The Baxter Inn’s whisky selection is second to none. Over 800 bottles line the backlit shelves, and the bartenders are like whisky encyclopaedias, happy to guide you through the options. I was introduced to an incredible 15-year-old Lagavulin that I’ll never forget.

Service #

Speaking of bartenders, the service was flawless. They were attentive, knowledgeable, and engaging without being overbearing. Even when the bar got busy (and it does), they made every patron feel like the most important person in the room.

The Crowd #

A mix of locals, travellers, and whisky aficionados created a welcoming, eclectic vibe. Everyone seemed to be there for the love of a good drink and great company.

The Bad #

The Hunt to Find It #

While the hidden location adds charm, it can also be frustrating. I spent a good ten minutes wandering aimlessly before spotting the entrance. A small sign would go a long way for first-timers.

The Crowds #

It’s popular for a reason, and that means it’s rarely quiet. By 8 pm, the bar was packed, and finding a seat was a challenge. If you’re not a fan of standing while you sip, arrive early or prepare to wait.

9/10

The Baxter Inn is a must-visit for whisky lovers and anyone craving an unforgettable bar experience. The combination of impeccable service, an unbeatable whisky collection, and a lively, welcoming atmosphere makes it a standout spot in Sydney. Deducting one point for the difficulty in finding it and the crowds, but it’s a small price to pay for such a magical place. Cheers to that!
